@Cruising Caribbean I didn't realise that there were 3 night getaways. It's a good idea, a weekend away but with a cruise, wouldn't it feel better to have a longer run. What sort of costs do you think you could get with a 3 night vacation?

@LukeJ I prefer longer cruises for sure, but if it's the most convenient option for work/school/financial circumstances then might as well go for it!  Costs for a 3-night cruise are more affordable all around. I personally think shorter cruises are the best when you live near the ship's homeport; that would allow you to avoid paying the cost of a flight. Shorter cruises will have better rates, including cheaper fees and gratuities because of the minimized duration. Do you live near a convenient port of call where you could embark without the need for a flight?

@Cruising Caribbeanwhere you live is definitely a plus point. A few people enjoy going away for weekends, and you do need to consider schools and work etc as you say. So if any ports are close to travelling to then what a fantastic idea. I however live about 4 hours away from the nearest port and certainly would not relish the idea of travelling that distance on a busy Friday afternoon/evening to catch a ship.

I agree, there are so many nice perks to living near a cruise port! I could understand 4 hours of driving to be a bit much just for a weekend getaway, but it's definitely not too bad either. Avoiding paying for and coordinating flights is so nice honestly. It helps keep the price of cruising more reasonable. It's also nice to show up at a port you are familiar with; being aware of parking and drop-off procedures ahead of time makes the process simplified.

@Cruising Caribbean The shorter cruises also have a much higher level of participation for events and shows.  Everyone is trying to jam all of the fun into their short vacations. I have spent a lot of time on the Navigator lately (from Los Angeles).  Even though I live in Seattle, the 2 hour plane ride is quick and usually pretty cheap. That along with a lot of free casino cruises from royal Caribbean make this a very cheap vacation.
