Doing my usual thing and looking for the best cruise to go away on, I was surprised to read that aboard princess cruises, all inclusive cruises cost from £40pp per day. In todays tight economy, surely that must a steal. Am I correct in thinking that?

@PaulB I would consider that to be a very great rate! However, you must consider the additional costs. Usually the port taxes, service fees, and other additional costs hike up the per day cost significantly. I recommend you look into those additional fees and see if the per day cost shifts any.

I can't imagine someone throwing property overboard. On my honeymoon cruise, someone "jumped" overboard. The coast guard came but he had passed away. I had actually dined with the man from Texas the day before at breakfast in the main dining room! It was awful.

I read going overboard is quite common on cruise ships. It's terrifying when you think about it

It's so tragic. I'm always so fearful to book a balcony with children. I usually opt for an ocean view stateroom instead because it makes me so nervous. It's even more possible when guests become severely intoxicated. I say if you are drinking heavily, it's best to stay away from the outside railing.

It is not really that common on cruise ships.  In fact it is pretty hard to fall off.  really you have to be doing something stupid like climbing the rails.   most of the overboard's are unfortunately from people jumping.   I recently heard the Royal Caribbean had 4.6 million guests in 2022 so the numbers when you factor all cruise lines would be more than 10 million and only a handful of people went overboard it statistically speaking is not 'quite common'

@Woody14Yes, and I think those most likely to climb rails are either severely intoxicated or children. I guess both of those options revert back to a child-like frame of mind. This particular instance in 2012 was actually really bizarre. The mother/son pair were seen quarreling on the balcony, and then he "fell" off. I met the mom at breakfast as well. Oddly enough they were both there for a gospel conference onboard. They invited us to join them one of the days, and then next thing we knew the son "fell" off the ship. It was the first, and only, time I have "Oscar, Oscar, Oscar" on the intercom system.

@Woody14 I agree in what you're saying, I meant I read that suicides were not as uncommon as you think on cruises. Accidents I can't see happening all that much, because as you already stated for the railings etc..

This 23 year old "fell" overboard just last month. Her body was recovered near the coast of South Africa.

It's so sad when someone feel as the only option they have left is to end their life, and I guess their wish is to have a final way to go.

Vacations are supposed to be relaxing and fun! When a tragedy like this occurs, it saddens the whole experience. I always appreciate when the edges of the ship are enclosed with durable glass that is at least 5 ft. tall. It makes me feel more relaxed when walking with my children on the outdoor decks.

It's Wave Season right now, which is a period of the year when cruise line tend to lower cruise fares to fill up ships for the upcoming summer season.

@LukeJ I agree! I think it's a great strategy for both the cruise lines and guests. Cunard Line is seeing its busiest Wave Season in ten years!

After COVID, I believe most people would like to start living again, seeing parts of the world and think this is the best way to doing that.

@PaulB I absolutely agree with what you're saying. I've seen first hand the loss that this has caused, and coming out from the other side, I believe people want to start living again like you say.

@LukeJ What better way to live then exploring the world on a cruise ship? Many ports are seeing an increase in demand for this year! I think everyone is truly ready to "live again."
