Overnight Ports

Recommended Posts

done a couple of overnights. one in Europe and one in Mexico (Cabo).    In both cases we could come and go all night if we wanted.   It was nice to see a port twice on a trip to do different things.

One note in Cabo it was a tender port and some of the cruise companies that did overnight did not allow guests to come and go.   We were on Celebrity and it was come and go but the Carnival ship you had to be back on board by 11 am and then they started about 6 am the next day.

@Woody14 It sounds like you enjoyed your overnight stays and would enjoy more! Most of the itineraries I have been on don't offer overnight itineraries. I just wonder why they are rarely offered. I understand that it's nice to cruise to the next destination when guests are sleeping, but some ports just deserve more time! I have been to a few ports that I really wish I had more time to explore. I have noticed the longer cruise itineraries are much better at integrating overnight calls. For me, more overnight stays would be welcomed and appreciated.

I don't think they do many overnights for a couple of reasons - one is demand many people don't seem to appreciate them.   You see that when you have the same cruise one with an overnight and one with out (so 1 day shorter) and the one with out the overnight sells better.     Second is that I think there are not too many ports that encourage it, from what I understand is that the ship is paying the port fees per day and not many offer a discount for the second day so they might as well go somewhere else.

I've never done an overnight port, I didn't think that was an option if it m honest, but it's something that I would love to have the opportunity to do so. Imagine staying over and seeing what these different places do for night time. What places do you know offer overnight visits?

We’ve been on a couple of cruises that had overnight ports.  One was in Cuba and the other was in Bermuda.  We didn’t take advantage of either by leaving the ship after 8pm or before 7am.

@Woody14 That's a good thought. I think many guests don't appreciate the value of overnight stays. With that being said, most guests likely prefer more daytime stops and traveling between those ships in the evening time. I would love the idea of overnighting at specialty ports with the intent to explore more of certain areas. I didn't even factor in port costs! That's likely the main reason I don't see many overnight calls. Thanks for sharing!

@FJB Some smaller ports of call aren't as enticing to stay too long, like Bermuda. I think half a day in Bermuda is enough for me. On the other hand, I want an overnight stay in Cartagena!

For me, I've always wanted to visit Canada, so a few overnight port of calls to any destination there would be my ideal scenario. Now you have my interest peeled, I'm going to take a look for overnighters and see whether I can incorporate that into any future vacations.

It's a difficult one I think. There are a load of great port of calls about, and I love visiting them, but to stay the night there, I'm not sure I'm a believer in. I like the fact that we visit for a few hours and then just continue on with our journey to the next port of call. Then again, it may not be the worst thing that would happen if we were staying in a fantastic port.

It would be great if you could leave the ship and stay longer in the ports. I'm imagining going to a show or a restaurant at these ports rather than having food onboard, which is also great too. I'm not sure if this is the protocol, but trying out different countries environment is also a vacation in itself.
