  1. Is there anyone on the current sailing whose logging in and wouldn't mind sharing a little update as to how things are going? I'm headed out on the next sailing and would love to hear anything you could share. Thanks......and sorry you had to deal with that snowstorm in order to get out. Hopefully it will be much better when you return.
  2. I came across it in another post somewhere (they said they saw it on FB). Long story short, ports accepting ships are going to vary week to week depending on what's going on with covid-19, both on the ship as well as in the port itself. While NCL is showing shore excursions for Turks (which only appeared recently for current and close sailings), I've not heard anything about Turks re-opening to cruise ships since it closed in 2020. I was happy to see a post earlier today in which the Encore looks like it made port in St. Thomas, a port the Gem has skipped the last 2-3 sailings due to covid-19. If you do a Caribbean sailing soon the weather should be warm (70-80 degrees). It's just a matter of where you ultimately end up in terms of ports. It can always be worse. There have been cruises down to the Bahamas during the summer which, due to a hurricane down that way end up heading north to Canada instead as it is the Captains duty to protect the passengers, crew and ship above all else.
  3. Not sure but it may have, in part, been to the late departure from NYC. I read the ship did not leave until close to 10:00 PM that night due to the storm. Looks like the itinerary for this trip is Nassau, St. Maarten, Tortola and Puerto Plata which means Turks and St Thomas is still not accepting ships at this time.
  4. Thanks Penny for the heads up. I checked after seeing your post and they are showing shore excursions for us as well (Feb 8th).
  5. Update to my Monday post. I learned that the Gem was in D.R. on Saturday, at Catalina Island (D.R.) on Sunday, St. Maarten on Monday and Tortola on Tuesday. Haven't determined yet if they made St. Thomas today. One note - there was a small crisis on board over the weekend. They ran out of Baileys. Apparently they hadn't done a full replenishment since 1/2/22.
  6. There isn't a lot of information coming out of the Jan. 9th cruise. As best I could piece together there was a letter circulated on the 1st day at sea from the captain informing passengers that the Turks and St. Thomas post calls had been cancelled due to covid-19 issues (but did not specify what those issues were). I then read somewhere that Tortola was cancelled. That left D.R. and St. Maarten. In the end, it looks like the Gem spent 2 days in port at St. Maarten and cancelled D. R. as well. While the ship was supposed to head home early, the winter storm that came up the east cost Sunday into Monday had them rethink their plans and so the followed behind the storm, arriving when they were scheduled to return. Using various websites, the best I can determine is that the current cruise which left on Jan. 19th. made port in D.R. on January 22nd instead of Turks as it was supposed to and is in port at St. Maarten's today. Given Turks has been closed to cruise ships since 2020 I would not expect that any of these trips will stop there.
  7. I found an on-line link for tracking cruise ships positions and port visits. According to it the Gem docked in D.R. on 1/22/22 and not Turks as originally shown in the itinerary. Of course, most of us know that Turks hasn't accepted cruise ships since 2020 so I question why NCL hasn't modified the itinerary to reflect that. I guess they keep hoping for a change in the ports status. The tracker then showed it docked in St. Maarten today. The million dollar question is whether or not it will make the remaining ports of Tortola and St, Thomas. I guess only time will tell. I am scheduled to make this same trip in a couple of weeks so I would be very interested in anything anyone hears regarding this ship or ideally a report from someone who is returning on the current cruise and is willing to share their experiences with us. Thanks in advance.
  8. Was curious myself but unable to find any information. NCL's website, which updated it's Covid-19 information today regarding cancellations, did not list the GEM as being cancelled.
